Little things matter a lot during a DOT level I inspection. Any moisture around a wheel hub or a missing valve stem cap—which needs to be metal, by the way—can lead to violations on your inspection. The slightest leaks need your attention before they worsen.
Another thing, when an officer takes out a creeper and goes under your truck, you may only see a flashlight. But he has small hand tools that fit in his pocket, which are designed for measuring. He can measure the play in a tie-rod end or steering gear box, along with, the life remaining on a brake pad.
When the life of your brake pads gets below ¼ inch, it’s important to replace them. Don’t wait until you hear the pad grinding against the rotor. Same thing applies to the front end. When you get play in the steering wheel, get the front end looked at.
Most drivers are in their trucks enough that they can tell when things aren’t quite right. Learn to listen to and trust that instinct and get thinks checked out.
Happy trails,
Brian
