Heavy Traffic

Heavy Traffic

No matter what you’re driving—a toter with a mobile home, a box truck, or a pickup truck with an RV or multi trailer—driving in heavy traffic is always a pain, a downright aggravating experience.

You can’t relax because every time you put distance between you and the vehicle in front of you, some idiot cuts in front of you and slams on the brakes. Stop and go traffic mandates you stay very alert, watching your blind spots and paying attention to lane reductions and on ramps.

It’s just a lot more work and a lot more stress driving in heavy traffic, compared to having the road to yourself.

Unfortunately, there isn’t much you can do about the number of drivers using the same roadways you are.  But here are some ideas for what you can do to help you stay in control of these situations:

  • The obvious choice is to select routes that avoid known high-traffic areas like large cities or dense construction areas.
  • Plan your trip to avoid times of day that involve heavy commuter traffic.
  • Check any number of GPS systems—Google, MapQuest, the GPS platform on your smart phone–for the latest traffic news.
  • Lastly, try to stay calm, relaxed and patient.

The first three bullet points above are good ideas that professional drivers recommend with confidence.  But all the experts agree that the best thing you can do to make heavy traffic less aggravating and dangerous to you and your load is to just “not be in hurry.”

Accepting that hurrying will not help and being patient and careful will win the day, in the end.

Happy trails,

Brian
