Turning

Here’s a topic that probably doesn’t get enough print—turning. All Commercial Vehicle operators are aware that turning can be challenging but not much gets said on the topic, outside of CDL school.

The bottom line is that whether you’re towing a mobile home or an RV, you need more room to turn than the average motorist. Often you need more than just your lane.  Especially if you’re turning to the right. You don’t want to drive over the curb and you don’t want to encroach on the motorist who is sitting in the left hand lane waiting to turn on to the road you’re turning off from.

Here are some tips to help make your turns safe and smooth:

Slow your vehicle down early and apply your turn signal.

Check your mirrors and when you determine it’s safe, move your vehicle left to turn right or right to turn left.

Survey the intersection as you approach, checking for traffic challenges.

When appropriate, “box the corner.” Which means drive straight into the intersection before you start turning.

Take as much room as you need, just don’t impede traffic.

When you have the necessary lane room to execute the turn without driving over the curb, execute the turn.

When you encounter the unfortunate situation of not being able to complete the turn because a motorist is sitting in the left-turn lane waiting for the light to change and won’t—or can’t—back up to give you room, you will simply have to wait until the light changes and that motorist moves his vehicle.

Turning a big rig is not always smooth or easy and sometimes you just have to do what you have to do. When those situations arise, be as courteous to other drivers as you can and always be safe.

Happy trails,

Brian
