Tire Blowouts

Tire Blowouts

One of our drivers messaged us about a popular truck stop where the air pressure pump was not working. She wanted all drivers to be aware.

This driver was concerned about avoiding a safety issue we don’t discuss often—tire blowouts. We haven’t had many tire blowouts at Pinnacle, but it’s still worth discussing so drivers know what to do if it happens.

As with all maintenance issues on a CMV, a proper pre-trip inspection is critical in preventing a disaster. Every day you should check the tires on your truck and trailer to make sure they are properly inflated, meet tread depth requirements and look for any signs of tire breakdown, such as exposed belts or unusual wear.

Once underway, you should avoid road debris and inspect the tires each time you stop. Remember that an underinflated tire gets hotter than a properly inflated tire and is more prone to blowing out. The possibility of a blowout is another good reason to always remain alert with a good grip on the steering wheel.

If a tire blows out it’s a problem, no matter the tire position, but losing a steer tire is the most dangerous. If a steer tire blows out, the truck will immediately pull hard to that side. Here are tips as to what you should do in that event:

  • Remain calm and hold the steering wheel firmly with both hands.
  • Avoid any overreactions.
  • Keep the steering wheel as steady as possible to maintain control of the rig.
  • Look for an escape route if you are not already in the far right lane.
  • Decelerate by removing your foot from the accelerator. Tap the brake gently.
  • Apply the jake brake if so equipped and/or downshift.
  • Do not make any sudden steering adjustments. Sudden or severe movements of the steering wheel can have catastrophic consequences.
  • Once you have slowed enough and have full control over the truck, merge onto the shoulder and stop.

Obviously, now you must disperse your emergency triangles and call for a mobile tire service. If you follow these tips only the tire will be damaged. “Thanks to Amanda Lundy,” the driver who gave us this tip.

Happy trails,
