No. This isn’t another lecture on speeding. This is to help make all the Pinnacle drivers aware that driving too fast is more than just speeding and can be very incidental.
Everyone understands speeding—driving more than the posted speed limit. Good drivers choose not to speed, and other drivers make bad choices. What we’re talking about here could amount to speeding, in the end, because in some cases it is the result of driving too fast for conditions. But knowingly exceeding the speed limit is not the issue.
This talk is about unexpected driving challenges that arise, and you realize you are going too fast to escape cleanly:
- Going down the freeway within the speed limit and encountering stopped traffic with not enough distance to stop your truck.
- Driving along minding your own business and encountering a winter white out condition or other type of extreme driving hazards from in climate weather.
- A motorist changes lanes right in front of you and slams on his breaks.
- Taking your eyes off the road to grab your coffee cup and finding a deer has come out of the ditch and is right in front of you.
- Cresting a long grade and not stopping to build up enough brake pressure to control your speed going down.
The common denominator in each of the bullets is that the driver was not being negligent or careless. Still, he probably was going too fast for the issue he encountered.
The only way to combat these types of challenges is with alertness and attentiveness. If you are making good choices with your speed and combine that with constant vigilance, you will be prepared for any obstacles that come your way.
