Here is some information you will find interesting–and logical—as you think about it.
According to the Indiana Trucking Association, more accidents involving tractor-trailers occur on Thursdays than the rest of the days in the week.
In fact, this phenomenon is referred to as “Fatal Thursdays.” Not only is Thursday the day of the week when most accidents occur, it is also the day of the week when most fatalities caused by trucking accidents occur.
Conversely, Saturdays and Sundays are the days when the least number of accidents occur, because there are fewer trucks on the road. Friday is the second highest day with accidents and the quantity of accidents occurring on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays are very similar each day and fewer than Thursdays and Fridays.
The data points to drivers being more fatigued later in the week compared to the start of the week, as the reason for this phenomenon. Experts agree that is the most likely reason for this, but road conditions and vehicle maintenance can also be factors.
The point is, no matter what you’re driving, you should take heed and be more aware of your personal fatigue levels as the week progresses.
Get more valuable rest on Wednesdays and Thursdays and don’t push as hard. It is also wise to recognize that there could be many other drivers sharing the road with you who are more fatigued than you.
Heighten your defensive driving strategies as the week progresses—it could save your life.
Happy trails,
Brian
