If you don’t think you need one, keep reading…
It’s almost a joke in the transportation industry that when an accident with fatalities occurs and a commercial motor vehicle is involved, the driver of the CMV is assumed guilty until proven innocent. Such was the case last week in Canada.
On Thursday, June 15th, a semi-tractor in Manitoba collided with a charter bus of senior citizens on its way to the Sands Hill Casino in Carberry, Manitoba. The crash, and ensuing fire killed 15 people and injured 10 more, according to an article on TruckersNews.com. The bus was within 15 minutes of its destination. Both the bus driver and the truck driver survived the crash but were hospitalized with injuries.
An investigation by the Royal Mounted Canadian Police (RCMP) found the bus was southbound and crossing the eastbound lane when it was struck by the truck. At issue—which they couldn’t determine at first–was which vehicle had the right-of-way.
When the RCMP viewed the truck’s dash cam video, it was apparent the truck had the right-of-way. The truck driver was exonerated because of the video. It’s not an exaggeration to say that dash cam video saved that driver’s career, numerous civil suits and kept him out of jail. That dash cam video ensured that driver he was not going to pay for a tragedy that was not his fault.
That driver could have been any of us. Do you still think you don’t need a dash cam?
Happy trails,
Brian
